Organic farms shown to be more productive than... →
jtotheizzoe: A 30-year study by the Rodale Institute (disclaimer: It’s an organic research institute) found that the return per acre of organic farms was almost three times that of conventional farms, and yields were higher for organic crops in drought years. Part of the gain comes from the premium prices paid for organic goods, but there’s still very meaningful advantages to farming organic: ...

How Would You Make Our Food System More Awesome? →
dandelionwine: Our current food system is decidedly not awesome: it subsidizes food that makes us sick and makes it difficult to get ahold of anything fresh. But a micro-grant foundation, called Awesome Food, that launched last week is trying to make it better. Starting next month, it intends to give out $1,000 per month to “further food awesomeness in the universe.” If you get...

I’ve discovered some other excellent bloggers and compilers out there as well. Thanks for reading, and keep learning, spreading the word, and making wise choices!

Twinkies Vs. Carrots - Why we pay more for...
fitvillains: Why is it that carrots (seed, plant, grow, eat) cost more than twinkies (complex product of years of research, over 40 ingredients, expensively designed packaging etc.)? Food politics are not designed to protect you, your health or our environment. Be informed! Check this out and be sure to visit the Nourish Life website.

Refills - Will They Ever Catch On?
It’s true, nobody seems to like refill pouches. While they do cut down a lot on shipping and resources, why won’t people use them? It’s kind of like the bulk bins for oats or rice, it seems like a great idea, but how many people really buy bulk instead of neatly pre-packaged boxes that are more expensive? Do you use refill pouches, why or why not?

Think City Living is More Eco Friendly than... →
envirolutionary: As it turns out it really comes down to what you consume not where you live. A lot of urbanites, including me, often brag about how much more environmentally sound their lifestyles are than people who commute to work every day and live in huge, one-family houses. Turns out we can jump right off our high horses. A new, more complex analysis suggests that CO2 emissions are...

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) today announced an agreement to jointly enforce U.S. and international air pollution requirements for vessels operating in U.S. waters. Pasta With Stuff
Fancy recipe title, I know. Call it CSA-inspired. Call it Heidi Swanson and Mark Bittman inspired. Call it clean-out-the-fridge. It was all of the above, and it was delicious. The beans made it much more substantial, so no meat was needed.  You could easily make it without the pasta as well, and just add even more beans and veggies. Any greens will do, kale, spinach, chard… WARNING: garlic...
